Settlement Support Worker

Position summary 

The Settlement Support Worker will ensure that resettled refugees move seamlessly into their new homes, they are linked with local service providers and that they have a point of contact should issues arise. The successful applicant will align their practice with the Settlement Council of Australia (SCOA) Settlement Sector Quality Framework and related Settlement Outcome Standards.

The role is a Casual position, working until 30 June 2027.

Duties

  • The majority of the activities will involve making linkages with service providers and ensuring that refugees are in receipt of their rights and entitlements. The activities will include –
    • Providing immediate support to recently arrived refugees settled in the local community;
    • Ensure that refugees are linked to essential registration service providers in the immediateperiod post arrival, eg: Services Australia (Centrelink), Medicare, ATO;
    • Support to secure accommodation, and provide information with regard to the running oftheir new home. Monitor progress with regards to bill paying, and household maintenance;
    • Link refugees to the HSP orientation program to ensure that they are aware of their rightsand entitlements and are in receipt of their entitlements;
    • Identify community supporters/organizations/groups available locally and making thenecessary introductions and linkages;
    • Referral to other mainstream services, and support them in their efforts to identify andprovide services such as schooling, childcare, health;
    • Making appropriate provision for persons with special needs, including working withmainstream service providers with regard to accessing appropriate services;

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma in Community services work or similar field
  • Experience working with newly arrived communities, including demonstratedunderstanding of the needs of individuals/communities, and the services and resourcesavailable to them;
  • Basic visa knowledge in relation to Subclass 202 applications (if applicable);
  • Case work experience in conducting needs assessments, case planning development andimplementation, using strength-based practice frameworks;
  • Effective interpersonal, cross cultural communication and client advocacy and referralskills and the ability to liaise effectively with contractual partners, community serviceproviders, clients, their communities and volunteers;

Desirable:

  • Lived experience as a member of a multicultural community and the ability tospeak a second language including, Arabic, Dari, Farsi, Karen, Hazaragi, Karenni will behighly regarded;
