Position summary

The Child and Family Restoring Practitioner plays a critical role in delivering intensive, family-centred support to children, young people and families experiencing complex challenges. The role implements a wraparound, evidence-informed case management approach that promotes child safety, family wellbeing, family restoration and long-term stability.
Using a strengths-based, trauma-informed and culturally responsive practice framework, this Practitioner works collaboratively with families to identify goals, build capacity, strengthen family relationships and improve outcomes for children and young people. Service delivery is flexible, relational and responsive to the unique needs, strengths and cultural backgrounds of each family, drawing on evidence-informed interventions, family led decision making and restorative practice principles.
The role provides assertive outreach and works closely with internal programs, community organisations, specialist services and government agencies to coordinate integrated support responses. Particular emphasis is placed on supporting families from multicultural, refugee and newly arrived communities, ensuring services are culturally safe, inclusive and accessible.
The Child and Family Restoring Practitioner is part of a multidisciplinary team committed to strengthening families, preventing escalation of risk and supporting children and young people to remain safely connected to their families, communities and culture wherever possible.

This position will be contracted on a temporary part time basis until 30 June 2028, working 33.75 hours per week.

 

Duties

  • Deliver intensive, family-centered interventions that support family restoration, preservation, reunification and long-term family stability,
  • Provide intensive case management and tailored support to families experiencing multiple and complex needs, ensuring interventions are outcomes-focused, culturally responsive and aligned with legislative and organisational requirements.
  • Work within a strengths-based, trauma-informed and culturally safe framework, recognising and responding to the diverse needs of multicultural communities (including those from refugee and migrant backgrounds) and first nations people, where the client identifies preference for non-indigenous organization.
  • Undertake assertive outreach, including home visits and community-based engagement, to build trusting relationships with children, young people and families and reduce barriers to accessing services.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments, risk assessments and safety planning processes to identify family needs, strengths, risks and protective factors, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of children and family members.
  • Develop, implement and review Child and Family Action Plans in partnership with families, Child Protection (where applicable), and relevant service providers to achieve sustainable outcomes.
  • Work collaboratively with families to strengthen parenting capacity, family functioning, child development and family relationships through coaching, practical assistance, advocacy and skill-building interventions.
  • Facilitate timely access to specialists, community and universal services, supporting families to build connections and strengthen informal and formal support networks.
  • Utilise evidence-informed interventions and practice frameworks to address the impacts of trauma, family violence, mental health, alcohol and other drug use, disability, settlement challenges and social isolation.
  • Establish, participate in and coordinate Care Teams and multidisciplinary meetings to ensure integrated service responses and effective coordination of supports.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • A tertiary qualification in social work, psychology or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated understanding of the ‘Best Interests’ Case Practice Model and Children Youth and Families Act (CYFA) 2005 and 2015 amendments and possess a Comprehensive knowledge of the Child and Family Services sector.
  • Experience in delivering strengths-based risk and needs assessments with families and managing risk;
  • Proven capacity to work in a collaborative manner within Family Services settings.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Understanding of trauma and its impact on adolescents and families;
  • Understanding of family violence and its impact on adolescents and families;
  • Understanding of the impact of disability for adolescents and families.
  • Current full Victorian Driver’s Licence.

Desirable

  • Lived Experience as a member of a multicultural community
